My Views on the Characters

Mulder is of course the reason the X-Files are even pursued to the degree they are. It's very hard not like Mulder, he's got this witty way about him and you have to love all his way out there explanations that usually end up being true. Though like anyone he does have his weaknesses. He is totally obsessed with what happened to his sister Samantha, who he believes was abducted by aliens when she was eight years old. This one event has managed to be a very defining part of Mulder's life. Not long after that his parents got divorced and he grew up basically just with his mother. Before becoming a FBI agent Mulder also went to college at Oxford in England. Once at the FBI he started out as a profiler with good results, though once he discovered the X-Files he decided to make that his life work. Mainly because he felt it would answer many of the questions he needs answered, especially the ones about his sister. Though in his search for the truth Mulder has hit many obstacles. One was his being assigned a partner, Dana Scully, who was initially assigned to debunk his work, which didn't stop him, it didn't even slow him down. Over the years of working on the X-Files Mulder has managed to get into many tight spots that could've gotten him killed, personally I think with everything he's done to people like CSM, he should be dead (not that I'd want that though). CSM is the major obstacle in Mulder's quest for the truth. He holds all the cards and probably will never give Mulder anything not unless Mulder changes sides. As for his other relationships, he doesn't really have a social life to speak of, he does have a very close bond to Scully. If he would only open his eyes I think he might find some true love with her. As for his relationship with Walter Skinner his boss, well it's a love/hate relationship at best. Skinner cannot stand all of Mulder's outlandish theories for everything, but has gone out on a limb for him more than once.

Agent Dana Scully is sort of what I consider Mulder's sidekick. I know it's not the best way to describe her, but they seem to be attached at the hip. Before becoming a FBI agent she was what one could call a military brat because her father was in the Navy and the family had to move around a lot when she was growing up. Once in college she decided to study medicine and become a doctor. After becoming one Scully decided to join the FBI against her family's wishes. At first she taught forensic science at the Academy and then was assigned to debunk Mulder's work on the X-Files. Every week you are guaranteed what I call "the rational explanation of the week" from her. She never really opens up to Mulder's theories because she looks at everything through a scientific eye. Personally, she gets to me at times with all those rational explanations. Honestly, not everything has a one after all. While working on the X-Files Scully was abducted by Duane Barry and taken somewhere (probably by the government at the request of the CSM) to have tests done on her. After being missing for a time she suddenly appeared in a hospital near death and then made a miraculous recovery. From that time on she had an implant in her neck, which is of unknown origin and had it removed. Not long after that, she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Scully continued to work even with poor health. Eventually she got to the point where she couldn't, but as of right now her cancer is now in remission, possibly due to the fact that she had an implant put back into her neck. Even with all the evidence Scully is still reluctant to believe anything Mulder says when it comes to his theories. You'd think after everything that happened to her, she'd be a bit more open to Mulder's way of thinking, I know I would.

Assistant Director Walter Skinner is probably one of the only characters on the show that Mulder and Scully can trust. Yes, he does answer to the Cigarette Smoking Man from time to time, but when it comes down to it, he is more than willing to stick his neck out and even put his life in danger for the Agents. Poor Skinner has gotten into almost as many scrapes as Mulder because of the X-Files. He's been beaten by up by Alex Krycek and his thugs for the much sought after digital tape, he's been shot by Louis Cardinal because Cardinal got ticked off at him for defending the waitress in the restaurant. Then he's practically had to sell his soul to the devil (a.k.a. Cigarette Smoking Man) to help cure Scully of her cancer. Most recently someone infected him with some kind of nanotechnology and he almost died. Lucky for him or then again not so lucky for him Krycek cured him because he was in control of the nanodisease that was killing him. My guess is he's going to end up owing Krycek big for that.

The ever-elusive Cigarette Smoking Man (CSM) has been the center of the conspiracy since the day Scully walked into Mulder's life. He's done everything from destroy evidence to having Scully abducted. He's also responsible for the global conspiracy Mulder so desperately wants the answers to. Somehow for many years he's been able to control everything the government knows and does regarding aliens, abductions, and experiments, some of which are performed by foreign doctors and scientists. This man seems to have an incredible amount of power, but the question still remains, how did he attain that power and why? CSM has been known to do just about anything to keep the project under wraps, he kills, plants moles in the FBI, hires thugs to kill Federal Agents and their family members. He once told one of his associates, the now deceased Well Manicured Man, that he was a necessity to their cover-up and that while his means might seem harsh that he was the only person who truly had the stomach for the "business". Whoever or whatever the CSM is, he is certainly not to be trusted, even by his own associates. After all they did have him killed or should I say tried to kill him to no avail. Also something to note we recently discovered that Cassandra Spender was CSM husband at one time and that Jeffery Spender is a product of that marriage, who apparently dies at his own father's hands.

Alex Krycek is probably the most confusing character to follow on the show. He's been everything from Mulder's partner to a CSM thug to a Russian spy/agent. He first appeared at a time when the X-Files were shut down and was assigned to work with Mulder on a case about mysterious deaths that center around a certain group of veterans. At the end of that episode it is revealed that he reports to the CSM. In the following episodes it is clear he has gained Mulder's trust because they seem to be closer. Though by the end of Ascension it appears as though Krycek has helped Scully become abducted and possibly had a hand in the death of Duane Barry. After that Krycek disappears into the woodwork, to reappear later to steal the famed digital tape from Skinner, who he beats up. Though like the motto of the show says, "Trust no one" and with that in mind Krycek with the digital tape is in a car with a bomb. Lucky for him he gets away unscathed and sells the secrets of the digital tape to the French. If that isn't enough he was also infected with the alien oil and under its control for a time and left in a silo to die. When he does resurface he ends up in Mulder's custody, who takes him to Russia to investigate something. Sadly for Krycek, while in Russia he gets his arm cut off. I won't go into to details, but it's not pretty to say the least. After that he had managed to become the "driver" for the Well Manicured Man and is now working for the CSM again.
