Ong King Si's foster farther had warned him about men like Lord Chun, and tells him never to trust Lord Chun. Ong King Si, refuses to accept Lord Chun's gold, and decides to go to the hotel to explain his objections. By doing this he had fallen into Lord Chun's hands. While Ong King Si was at the hotel, Lord Chun sends his 1st warlord to kill Ling Long and Ong King Si's foster farther. On the way home Ong King Si runs into Lord Chun's 2nd warlord, who pretends to have suffered an injury from an attack from Magistrate Ji Wan's men. By the time Ong King Si returns home, it is too late, Ling Long is already dead and his foster farther was badly injured. Lord Chun later arrives at Ong King Si house, to show his concern, and then frames Magistrate Ji Wan for the attack. At once Ong King Si sets out to kill Magistrate Ji Wan, but is no match for him and was injured in the process. Luckily for Ong King Si, Lord Chun had sent his warlords to protect him and he was rescued. After thanking Lord Chun for saving his life, Ong King Si decides to return home to look after his foster farther. When he returns to the house his foster farther had already been killed. Upon discovering the death of his foster farther, adding to the death of Ling Long, Ong King Si finally decides to become a loyal subject of Lord Chun. Lord Chun is very happy, that his plan had worked. He bestows Ong King Si as his 13th warlord, and changed his name to Lee Chin Hao. Although Lord Chun treats his 13 warlords like family, he treats Lee Chin Hao especially well, by giving him the most valuable gifts. Lord Chun knew that Lee Chin Hao was his best warlord, and wanted to obtain his complete loyalty. Lord Chun tells his daughter Lee Wan Long (Chun Yuk Lin) of his respect for the talents Lee Chin Hao. Lee Wan Long immediately becomes interested in Lee Chin Hao. Over time the remaining warlords become very jealous of Lee Chin Hao and Lee Chin Chek. At first Lee Chin Hao is unimpressed with Lee Wan Long antics, because she acts like a spoilt brat, and damages his property. Lee Wan Long is used to getting her own way as a Princess, so is really bitchy about getting, put in her place by a warlord. She becomes determined to make life difficult for Lee Chin Hao. One day the 10th warlord, Si King Si, decides to challenge Lee Chin Hao to a duel. The rest of the warlords are very jealous and hopes that Si King Si would win. Lee Chin Hao accepts the challenge, and they duel. Both men show exceptional speed and grace. Their fighting skills are both excellent. Si King Si, manages to cut away part of Lee Chin Hao's clothing. Lee Chin Hao could have taken Si King Si's head off with one foul stroke, and is therefore the winner. Si King Si is very impressed with Lee Chin Hao's kung fu, and they become very good friends much to the disgust of the remaining warlords. The remaining warlords decide to take their anger out on Lee Chin Chek, who has serious gambling habit. The warlords decide to dare, Lee Chin Chek, to steal the Princess's golden whip, in the hope that he would get caught and be punished. Little did they realize what a cunning man, Lee Chin Chek is. He convinces the Princess's maid, Ah Tan, who has a crush on him, to assist him to steal the Princess's golden whip. The warlords are totally stunned to see Lee Chin Chek, with the Princess, Lee Wan Long's, golden whip. Having lost they follow Lee Chin Chek, back to the Princess's quarters. They attempt to get Lee Chin Chek into trouble by locking him in the garden and shouting out thief. Lee Chin Chek, manages to turn the situation in his favor, by telling the Princess that he is in the garden to protect her. The Princess is pleased with Lee Chin Chek and shouts abuse at the rest of the warlords for not protecting her. Much to their disgust. Lee Chin Chek, falls in love with the princess upon seeing her beauty. Before leaving Lee Chin Chek decides to leave a red rose and a message on the table for the Princess. However her servant Ah Tan, was the recipient and thought that it was for her. One night while the rest of the warlords were out drinking and gambling, a hitman attempted to kill Lord Chun. Lee Chin Hao foiled the hitman's attempts to kill Lord Chun, but is unable to capture the hitman. Lord Chun, thought that the hitman was Si King Si, and plotted to kill him. He sends Hong Gwan Ling and Lee Chin Hao on an important mission to kill Si King Si. Meanwhile he sends Si King Si, out on a journey directly to where Lee Chin Hao and Hong Gwan Ling was waiting to ambush him. Lee Chin Hao does not believe that Si King Si, is the hitman, and wanted to take him in for questioning. As a former hitman himself, Hong Gwan Ling, does not care, his only motive is to kill Si King Si, and carry out Lord Chun's orders. Along the way Hong Gwan Ling decides to shake off Lee Chin Hao and Lee Chin Chek, so he could kill Si King Si by himself, and gain the respect of Lord Chun. Si King Si, is surprised and happy to see Hong Gwan Ling. As Si King Si was going over to greet Hong Gwan Ling. He was ambushed by Hong Gwan Ling, who stabs him in the chest with a knife at the back of his fan. Injured and bleeding Si King Si, is no match for Hong Gwan Ling who was going in for the kill, when Lee Chin Hao, jumps in and blocks the attempt with his sword. Hong Gwan Ling, does not back off though and continues battling with Lee Chin Hao, but is no match. Lee Chin Hao was in the process of taking Si King Si back for questioning when Lord Chun appears from behind the bushes. He had witnessed what had happened, and was surprised to see Si King Si alive. Lord Chun manages to divert attention by stating, that he was just testing the warlord's loyalty towards him. Lord Chun also pretends to show great concern for Si King Si's injury and treats him very well. Deep inside Lord Chun, knew that he could use Hong Gwan Ling to do all of his dirty work. Lord Chun also knew that, Lee Chin Hao was the only man who could kill Hong Gwan Ling if he decides to betray him. Later the 3rd warlord captures a bunch of warriors. Lord Chun decides to set the men free when he discovers that they wanted to kill Ji Wan. During the day 3rd warlord requested to leave Lord Chun to visit his family. Lord Chun becomes very suspicious and thinks that the 3rd warlord is the hitman. Without questioning the 3rd warlord, Lord Chun sends Hong Gwan Ling to kill him. The 3rd warlord was very happy to see Hong Gwan Ling, on the his journey home. As he was drinking the wine that Hong Gwan Ling had given him for the journey, he was killed. When Hong Gwan Ling returns with the body of the 3rd warlord, Lord Chun was very distributed and collapsed. The 3rd warlord was one of his favorites, and he vowed to get revenge on Magistrate Ji Wan, who was blamed for his death. Later a group warriors poison Ji Wan's water, and kills most of his soldiers and men. Ji Wan becomes trapped on the hill with his brother, big general, and two bodyguards. Having heard of Ji Wan's position Lord Chun and his warlords decide to celebrate. Late in the evening Magistrate's wife, Gum Mong Sin, arrives and begs Lord Chun to save her husband. Gum Mong Sin, is the former lover of Lord Chun. Lord Chun is still very much in love with her and agrees to save Magistrate Ji Wan, on the condition that she leaves Magistrate Ji Wan and lives with him. Left with no alternative Gum Mong Sin, agrees to Lord Chun's terms. Lord Chun immediately dispatches his warlords on a rescue mission, to save Ji Wan. Lee Chin Hao yet again manages to come in time and blocks one of the warriors attempts to kill Magistrate Ji Wan. After being rescued by Lord Chun, Magistrate Ji Wan, had thought that they had finally resolved their differences after many years of fighting. In a kind gesture, Lord Chun, receives an invitation to have a dinner in 10 days time, at Ji Wan's castle. Lord Chun was very pleased with the efforts of his warlords, but decides to heavily reward Lee Chin Hao, Lee Chin Chek, and the rest warlords only. Hong Gwan Ling, receives no reward for his efforts, and he becomes very jealous of Lee Chin Hao. When the Princess, Lee Wan Long, finds out the real motive behind Lord Chun's attempt to rescue Ji Wan, she runs away. Lee Chin Hao and Lee Chin Chek is sent to find her. Lee Chin Hao is very unhappy about this mission, because he would rather do something else with his time then chase after a spoilt brat. Lee Chin Chek, though is very happy because he is in love with Lee Wan Long. The Princess was captured and was about to be sold as a prostitute, when Lee Chin Hao and Lee Chin Chek, rescue her. Both the Princess and Lee Chin Hao, are poisoned in the process. With only one tablet remaining that could cure them, Lee Chin Hao decides to give it to the Princess. At first the Princess was very ungrateful at being saved, but after realizing that Lee Chin Hao was about to die, she reveals her true feelings. Lee Chin Chek becomes very jealous of Lee Chin Hao also, seeing that the Princess is in love with him. By some twist of fate, Lee Chin Hao, manages to live and they escort the Princess back to the palace. Again the two men are heavily rewarded by Lord Chun, much to the disgust of the other warlords, particularly Hong Gwan Ling, who is also in love with the Princess. By now Lee Chin Hao, knows that the Princess loves him, but he refuses to show his feelings for her because he still loves Ling Long. He finally gives in later on and they become lovers. During this time, the serious and cold Si King Si, falls in love with Gum Mong Sin's servant, Siu Fong. When ten days had past Lord Chun took his warlords to Ji Wan's castle, hoping to embarrass him. Lord Chun asked to see Ji Wan's wife, Gum Mong Sin, but she refused to come out knowing of Lord Chun's evil plans. Gum Mong Sin sends her servant Siu Fong out instead, much to Lord Chun's displeasure. Lord Chun becomes angry and works on another plan, to embarrass Ji Wan. Lord Chun orders Siu Fong to pour wine only for Lee Chin Hao and Si King Si. Hong Gwan Ling became bitterly jealous and decides to ask Lord Chun, to behead Siu Fong, after he had caused the servant to spill wine all over Lord Chun. Si King Si, immediately gets up to protest, and thinks of a clever plan that would save the life of Siu Fong and embarrass Ji Wan at the same time. He challenges one of Magistrate Ji's hired kung fu experts to a duel which would decide the fate of Siu Fong. Si King Si's, fighting skills were far superior to Ji Wan's hired hand. Si King Si, then asked Lord Chun to display mercy and demonstrate his greatness by sparing the life of Siu Fong. Lord Chun agrees happily to the demand having won a mental battle. Later Si King Si's love for Siu Fong causes lots of problems for him because Lord Chun and Ji Wan are enemies. When Lord Chun, finds out that Gum Mong Sin, would not leave Ji Wan for him he becomes furious. He decides to challenge his warlords to kill Ji Wan. Lord Chun also offered to marry the Princess to the warlord who could kill Magistrate Ji Wan as their reward. Lee Chin Hao promised Lee Wan Long that he would kill Ji Wan and marry her. Si King Si, and Lee Chin Hao where sent to challenge Ji Wan to a duel. On the side Lord Chun sends Hong Gwan Ling to ambush and kill Ji Wan using dirty tactics. Hong Gwan Ling ultimately fails and underestimates Ji Wan's fighting abilities. Ji Wan was seriously injured when ambushed by Hon Gwan Ling. Upon seeing Ji Wan injured, Lee Chin Hao and Si King Si decides to let him go. They are both honorable men, and would not take advantage of an injured man. Hong Gwan Ling, Lee Chin Chek, and the rest of the warlords gives chase, they are only worried about getting Ji Wan's head and marrying Lee Wan Long. In the process they are all captured, but they were later saved by Si King Si and Lee Chin Hao. After that episode Si King Si continued to arrange to see Siu Fong secretly at an old house. Later they were discovered, when the hitman, attempted to kill Lord Chun again. Lee Chin Hao was the first one to discover them together, after chasing the hitman to the house. He decides to keep the affair secret, and takes the dive for his friend. When the other warlords arrive, they find Lee Chin Hao, in bed wearing only his underwear, and the room smelt of perfume. They assumed he had been sleeping with some countrywoman. When Lee Wan Long hears about this she becomes very upset and jealous, and would not allow Lee Chin Hao to explain himself. Instead she spends most of her time with Hong Gwan Ling who had recently saved her life, giving him the wrong impression. Later they get back together when Lee Chin Chek, becomes the peacemaker between, Lee Chin Hao and Lee Wan Long. When Hong Gwan Ling finds out that he was being used all along, he plotted to get revenge. When he discovers that Si King Si was in love with Siu Fong, he decides to inform both Ji Wan and Lord Chun about the relationship. On they day that Si King Si had planned to run away with Siu Fong, he was captured by Ji Wan's men. He was later forced to marry Siu Fong at Ji Wan's castle. Lord Chun, believed that he had been betrayed by Si King Si, and sends the warlords to capture him. He was later freed by Lee Chin Hao, Lee Chin Chik, and Lee Wan Long. Hong Gwan Ling manages to follow Si King Si, who was going to see Siu Fong. Surrounded and with no where to run Siu Fong sacrifices her life for Si King Si, who is taken to Shaolin by Lee Chin Chek. When Lord Chun finds out that Si King Si is still alive he sends Lee Chin Hao to kill him, in order to display his loyalty. Instead of killing Si King Si, Lee Chin Hao decides to seek his help and attempt to kill Ji Wan, in the hope that Lord Chun will spare Si King Si's life in return for Ji Wan's head. Hong Gwan Ling was working as a double agent at this point decides to double cross Ji Wan. Traps are set when Ji Wan, and Lee Chin Hao, and Si King Si meet to duel. Upon seeing Hong Gwan Ling, Si King Si, flies over to try and kill him. By doing this he had fallen into Hong Gwan Ling's trap. While fighting with Hong Gwan Ling's hired hands, Si King Si, was shot in the back with an arrow by Hong Gwan Ling and dies. Meanwhile Lee Chin Hao was battling fiercely with Ji Wan who suffers an injury. Lee Chin Hao also suffers an injury in the process, and was kicked down the mountain by Hong Gwan Ling. Lee Chin Hao was later saved by a farmer, and meets up with Ah Tan (Princess's servant), who told him that Lee Chin Chek, had been killed by Hong Gwan Ling. Hong Gwan Ling reported to Lord Chun, that Ji Wan, Si King Si, Lee Chin Chek, and Lee chin Hao where all dead. Lord Chun became shock and worried, because Lee Chin Hao was the only man who can kill Hong Gwan Ling. Left with no choice Lord Chun promised to marry Lee Wan Long to Hong Gwan Ling. Lee Wan Long refuses and decides to run away, and later meets Lee Chin Hao at the old farm house. Lee Chin Chek meanwhile, was back on the streets being a con-artist, when he runs into Ah Tan, and is taken back to the farm house where they all meet. Later Gum Mong Sin is captured by Lord Chun when she was carrying vital medicine back for her husband, Ji Wan. Gum Mong Sin, refuses to live with Lord Chun, and is accidentally killed when Lord Chun became outraged. Having thought that Ji Wan was dead, Lord Chun, left his castle to see Emperor Tong, to claim Ji Wan's land. On the way he discovers that he had fallen into Ji Wan's trap and they where surrounded by Ji Wan's army. While he was away Ji Wan surrounded Lord Chun's castle with his army also. Luckily for Lord Chun, Lee Chin Hao managed to find out about Lord Chun's troubles and sets out to rescue him. Meanwhile Hong Gwan Ling, finds out the army surrounding the castle was lead by a fake Ji Wan. He passes this information to the rest of Ji Wan's soldiers and they run. Back at his castle Lord Chun decides to send men to capture Ji Wan. Working together Hong Gwan Ling and Lee Chin Hao, managed to capture Ji Wan, who was later killed. Although dead Ji Wan had won the mental battle between Lord Chun, because Gum Mong Sin had always loved him and not Lord Chun. The next day Lee Chin Hao, duels with Hong Gwan Ling, who receives help from two other warlords. Luckily for Lee Chin Hao, his good friend Lee Chin Chek, flies in and battles with the other warlords. In a one on one battle, Hong Gwan Ling was no match for Lee Chin Hao and was killed. The other two warlords where killed by Lee Chin Chek also. Upon returning to the palace, Lord Chun, had planned to kill him. The wine was poisoned, but before he could drink it, the hitman attempted to kill Lord Chun again. Lee Chin Hao and Lee Chin Chek, gives chase and discovers that the hitman was the 9th warlord all along. His real identity, is the 3rd Prince of Emperor Tong, and his mission was to kill Lord Chun. Lee Chin Hao also learns from the 9th warlord that Lord Chun was planning to kill him, and was the one who sent men to kill his foster farther and Ling Long. According to the 9th warlord Lee Wan Long is the real daughter of the Emperor and not Lord Chun. Lee Chin Hao does not believe the 9th warlord and returns back to the castle to find the truth. By this time Lord Chun had captured the Princess, and kept her at a secret location. Lord Chun had planned to marry Lee Wan Long, to his own son who was the 2nd warlord. When Lee Chin Hao arrives back at the castle, Lord Chun, toasts the four remaining warlords for their services. Lee Chin Hao decides not to drink the wine, and a few moments later the other 3 warlords collapse and die. Realizing that he was trapped Lee Chin Hao makes a run for it. He later returns and captures Lord Chun by surprise. Lord Chun was used as a hostage, to find the location of the Princess. Having found the Princess, Lee Chin Hao was in the process of deciding whether to kill Lord Chun or not, when Lord Chun grabs his sword. They battle and Lord Chun was kicked out onto the balcony, where he was shot by his own son. Unknown to Lee Chin Hao, an arrow struck the Princess also. At this time Lee Chin Chek, rides by with a horse and battles with the soldiers. Lee Chin Hao uses this distraction and escapes with the Princess, who later dies in his arms. After burying the Princess Lee Wan Long, Lee Chin Hao decides to become a monk at Shaolin. Lee Chin Chek, marries At Tan and has 2 sons. At the end Lee Chin Chek, is still a con-artist, with a passion for gambling. Just the way he was at the beginning. RATING - 7/10 "The Wild Bunch", is one of my favorite TVB Series. In terms of the plot, it was pretty average, we have a Princess who was acting like a spoilt brat and acting bitchy. Now where have I seen that before? Probably in every 8 out of 10 TVB Series. The two lovers also hate each other in the beginning and end up together. That's been done before as well. Two friends, Hong Gwan Ling, turn into enemies fighting over one woman. Nothing new in that either. To sum it up the plot consisted of a collection of sub plots that have been used by TVB before. The ending was sad and tragic, as was the entire series. What I like most about this series is the acting and the superb casting. Wong Yat Wah was terrific in his role as Lee Chin Hao. Dong Wai, was a very funny as the con-artist Lee Chin Chik. Wai Tin Zi, was superb as the stone-faced, Si King Si. Tong Chun Yip, was good also as Hong Gwan Ling. Idy Chan looked really pretty in this series, and did an exceptional job as Lee Wan Long. This was one of Idy's first series and her superb acting in the role of a "aggressive princess", led to her appearing other TVB series acting in virtually the same roles. The Grand Canal is one example. The theme song was very good, and so was the costumes used. If not for the terrific cast and good acting, this series would not even be worth watching. 7 out of 10 is a fair rating for a TVB series that seem to have very little purpose. WONG YAT WAH AS LEE CHIN HAO Lee Chin Hao, is another one of these tragic heroic roles that Wong Yat Wah, has been casted in over the years. Lee Chin Hao is an honorable, and intelligent man. He is very loyal to those around him. This is demonstrated by his willingness to stay at the mountain with his foster farther, his love for Ling Long, and the many times he saved Lord Chun. In this role Wong Yat Wah, and Chan Yuk Ling also made a good on screen couple. His performance in this series was superb, however it is not one of the most difficult characters he has had to play either. To sum, it was a very good acting performance by Wong Yat Wah, however he has played these types of roles before. The lead is just a simple honorable man. SCENES
