INTRODUCTION

The Flying Fox of the Snowy Mountain 1999", is yet another reproduction of a novel written by famous kung fu writer Jin Yong. The list of Jin Yong reproductions seems to be endless. The original was made in 1985, starring Liu Leung Wai who acted as both Wu Fei and Wu Yat Do. Other members of the cast include, Tse Yin as Miu Yan Fung, Chic Mei Chun, Chan Sau Chow, Chiu Ngar Chi, Tsang Wah Sin, and Chow Siu Lan. In that series the cast performed exceptionally well, and well above expectations. However because the cast did not include any one of the "Five Tigers", it did not receive much acclaim.

This year TVB decided to make a reproduction of the series. Wong Yat Wah gets the role of Wu Yat Do, Chan Kam Hung gets the role of Wu Fei, Wan Yeung Ming as Miu Yan Fung, and Cheung Siu Fai as Tin Gwai Lo. According to various rumors TVB only managed to attain the rights to one of the novels, "Flying Fox of the Snowy Mountain", to make this series. TVB did not have the rights to "The Young Flying Fox". Despite this TVB felt confident that their own scriptwriters could come up with something just as brilliant. Therefore they went ahead with filming "The Flying Fox of the Snowy Mountain 1999", in the middle of summer of all things. Snow in summer???? The recipe for disaster is certainly on the cards. From these facts alone many surprises are installed for the diehard Flying Fox fans, not to mention the author himself, but wait there's more. More! More! They should have thrown in a set of free stakes knives for every episode watched, so we can aim them at the scriptwriters. Many characters have been eliminated, or have had their names changed. The plot too has taken radical twists and turns.

This story is set in the period when the Ming Dynasty (1368 AD to 1644 AD) collapsed and the Ching Dynasty (1644AD to 1912 AD) was established. The story is based on the events of the last Ming Emperor Chong. Apparently Ng Sam Kwai betrayed Emperor Chong and collaborated with Manchurian soldiers of Ching to invade China. Emperor Chong and four brave knights where trapped in the mountains, surrounded by Ching soldiers. The four nights who fought bravely to protect Emperor Chong were Wu, Fan, Miu, and Tin. In desperation Fan, Miu and Tin volunteered to go on a mission to contact help. Wu elected to stay behind to protect Emperor Chong. Upon returning Miu, Fan and Tin where surprised to find Wu as the protector of the enemy Ng Sam Kwai. The misunderstanding between Wu and Miu, Tin and Fan led to many years of bloodshed between the families.

The story of Wu Fei is set during Chein Lung's rule as Emperor (1736 AD - 1795 AD). In history Chein Lung is actually one of the few good Emperors during the Ching Dynasty. China flourished and was economically sound under his rule. Another historical figure is Chan Ka Lok, the leader of "The Red Flower Society", who seeks to reestablish the Ming Dynasty.
