The Unofficial Roberto Benigni Fan Site

Since I began this site, people have contacted me to either compliment the site or to praise Mr.Benigni, himself. Unfortunately, I have no contact with Mr.Benigni, but I thought the best way for these people to be heard is to put their messages on the site. So here they are....

Hello Mr Benigni,
I know every body says to you congradulation and I am one of them. I am 12 years old and I live in Canada and when I saw La vita é Bella for the first time I fell in love with it and I saw it 3 time and for my birthday on october 12 my dad is going to by it for me. I think you movie is the best movie I ever saw. I admirer you and I am certain that I will always do. I thought that you movie had a great senario (ideas to)and that is the only thing that can make a great movie. Like Hitchcock said "For a movie you only need 3 things 1 a good senario 2 a good senario 3 a good senario". In your movie, some sene where to fast like: when you fall on "Nicoletta" when you are on your bicycle. But I think the acting was verry good and YES you deserve those oscars. BYE! BYE! and condgradulations again. P.S. If you get to read this letter well I would apreciate if you woul right to me back and i dont mind if you right it in italien. Thank you!!!

Buongiorno Signore. My name is Arthur Sculco. I am an italian american who saw the movie La vita e Bella. I thought the film was fantastic and deserved the academy award for best picture..- it was a shame it did not receive it. Please ask Signore Benigni if he agrees with me in that I believe the most "Pungente Scena" in the film was the scene where he played the recording of La Belle Nuit. I would like to know if he likes my usage of the word pungent (Pungente in Italian) to describe that particular scene.(PS I think it is too bad that americans pronounce his name like it is spelled benini instead of beneenyee as it should be pronounced!)
FROM:rmaribel@yahoo.com

Roberto:
I never thought one movie could make me feel like yours did. Life is Beautiful is just excelent. It is just perfect. It is the most original film I have ever seen. I laughed and cried from the bottom of my heart. In my opinion you should have win the best picture at the Oscars. Now I'm your new fan. Imagine, now I want to learn italian and want to see all the movies you have made. Thanks for making that beautiful film.

I hope that you read this one day because I think you are one of the most talented actors on earth. Me and my friends saw "Life Is Beautiful" over spring break and I actually cried in the theatre. This is one of the most spectacular movies ever made and we are so glad that you won the 2 Oscars you very much deserved. When you jumped up on your seat in joy, so did my friends and I. I hope to become an actress/director when I grow up and your film is defintely one that inspired my dream. Congratulations Roberto; I hope to see you on stage with a statuette again very soon.

When my entire family went to the movies to see a foreign film that my grandma had recommended to us, we had no idea what the story was about. We were soon met by a crowd coming out of the previous showing. When not a soul had a dry eye, I immediately realized this would be a powerful fillm. Not many films have an impact like this on it's audience, so we eagerly took our seat. Since then I've seen the movie twice more. With each additional viewing, you pick up a little more of the story and catch the smallest things in Benigni's ingenious performance. I was so happy to see him take the award for best actor at the Oscar's. I hope to see him on stage accepting many more awards for his work in the future. Although he has received tons of recognition and feedback fom both critics and fans alike, I'm sure he'd be delighted to receive letters like this from fans of his across the globe. If it was possible to send the letters listed in the "Fan's Reaction" to Roberto, I'm sure we'd see his biggest smile yet.

For Roberto

Hello. I want congratulate you Roberto. I admire you strongly. Sometimes something exploit in my mind, reading a book, hearing a music and so on, this is just with your film, a awakening, a shake. The message of the film is my philosophy of life from some years ago: humour and love (in spanish: amor y humor). Laugh and love over all bad things of life, I think. is reflected very well in all scenes, the man win. I know, you will be in near future an cult object by people that likes keep idols. You musn't change never, be simple, look at your heart and do your films, withouth pressures, withouth conditions, at this way I think we will see more times at wonderfull man you have in your inner. Hollywood is just an illusion, tomorrow can forget you. So as said Norman Jewison: tell good stories. On TV I saw a transparent man between very much people rigid and complicated, I was laughing very much with your cheerfulness, I enjoyed with you. Roberto: Thank you very much from my hearts. Never change. Laugh, love and, of course, do good films. Your soul is beatiful. Greetings for princess.
FROM:GeekyRice@aol.com

hello. i am an extremely new roberto benigni fan. i saw him on the oscars and was very touched and filled with hope watching him, i almost cried. i saw in him things that the world needs to realize and learn. just today i saw life is beautiful, and i realized that this man has a remarkable understanding of the world. i cranked out this little essay, it just came to me, entitled "what everyone needs to learn from roberto benigni."

i never usually watch the oscars, but for some reason this year i decided to watch. i've always been a big movie fan, but i've always found the oscars to be rather generic, uneventful, and very, very hollywood. the buttoned-up, opressed, overbearing, and conformist hollywood, with its strict standards for almost everything that often manifest themselves in today's society. our society always has relied on strict standards of conformity to keep things "working as they should be." one gear out of place and you knock the whole machine out of whack. we are taught early on to fear emotional involvement for the pain it may cause. we don't express ourselves for fear of ridicule. we focus on the negative and mock those happier than us, because while we have mastered envy and depression, we don't know a thing about joy. then, out of all this, at the very hollywood oscars, the epitome of this whole mess, hops roberto benigni, shocking america with joy. he hops across these very chairs of conformity, with his movie that breaks many of these unwritten laws. a comedian does a tragedy, and furthermore, finds joy in something negative. he breaks his role, he breaks the mold. he lets his true emotions take over, and he becomes a spectacle. we shouldn't mock him, we should learn from him and use him as an example, because he has obviously realized that which so many of us are lacking. realize there's nothing wrong with love, that there's nothing wrong with joy, that making love and thoughts of it aren't perverted and naughty, it's how people use them that makes the difference, because they can be just as beautiful as they can be naughty. there is joy even in the darkest places. find it. sometimes you've just go to let yourself go free and not worry about this well oiled machine of life. it can stand to get a little out of whack. we shouldn't live in fear of ridicule, and we shouldn't live in fear of pain. these things are inevitable. those that ridicule us are simply trying to figure out how to find the joy and love they can't bring themselves to feel. let it all out and be who you really are, deep inside, under the masks the world has us wear. you can't shed them all, but you can try to shed some. jump on chairs, twirl around, let yourself free, feel what you really feel. i don't intend to sound cynical. our world is a wonderful place. it's up to everyone else to learn from roberto benigni and find all the great happiness this wonderful world as to offer us. life really is beautiful.

This movie was the most touching to me. Roberto Benigni didn't forget to put other people that were in concentration camps. I was surprised by this. It wasn't only the Jews who were persecuted by the Nazi's and Mr. Benigni didn't forget that and I appreciate it. I hope to see more of his work.

Mr. Benigni,
Thank you so very much for sharing your beautiful film with us. I am a 20 yr. old male student at the University of South Carolina and I have always loved films. Your movie reminded me of why I loved them so much. After viewing your film the first time I was overwhelmed by it's beauty and I wept for at least a half an hour, not from sadness, but because I was so lucky to have been alive to see Life is Beautiful. I want my children to see it one day. It changed the way that I look at the world in a way no film ever has. I have seen the film three times and will see it countless more, I never thought that I could like any film more that Citizen Kane but you proved me wrong. You have captured the essence of everything that makes storytelling so magical and I feel honored to have shared a little in your joy. You are truly a Godsend in an age of filmmaking that has become all too cynical. Thank you from the bottom of my soul.

As I watched you receive your first Oscar last night, I was surprised when tears began streaming down my cheeks. Just thinking about the beautiful message of your movie suddenly provoked feelings of happiness and sadness for me all at once. I don't think I have ever seen a movie that illustrates so simply and perfectly the beauty of life and the strength of the human spirit. With all of the empty Hollywood movies that seem to dazzle America audiences, it's wonderful to see a movie like yours receive so much attention and appreciation here. Congratulations on your Oscar triumphs! I have loved movies since I was a small child, but your film has touched me like no other. I have seen La Vita E Bella seven times in the theatres and I will buy it the minute it arrives on video. The combination of comedy and tragedy conveys a story which speaks to the heart with every possible voice. I plan to visit Italia (Roma e Firenze) in late April and I look forward to seeing your beautiful country and experiencing the wonderfully rich culture from which you have emerged. Thank you for demonstrating to millions of restrained Americans the ease and importance of expressing your emotions (especially to your beautiful wife!) and that "Exuberance is love!". I have always had an avid interest in the Holocaust, and am a strong believer that we should not ever forget that part of our history. I initially went to see this film because of it's Holocaust related content. What I walked away with was a realization of the genius that is Roberto Benigni. This man is a comic mastermind, and the way he implemented his talents in a movie about such a sensitive subject just completely amazes me. I have since rented Johnny Stecchino, which is the funniest movie I have ever seen by far. And the movie, Night on Earth, would not have been worth watching at all without his skit as an Italian taxi driver. It had me on the floor laughing the entire time. And again, with Son of the Pink Panther...would have been nothing without Roberto Benigni. I cannot tell you how thrilled I am that he is finally getting the recognition that he deserves here in the USA. I'll be on the edge of my seat on Oscar night rooting for him the whole time!! Good luck, Roberto!!
FROM:EDF81@aol.com

I would just to write and say that I think it is wonderful that you have devoted your time and effort to this web site. The Holocaust is something that I am very sensitive about, yet still throughout all the movies they have made, I feel it has not been truely told. When I saw Life Is Beautiful, I felt that the message had finally gotten across. It is a heart-wrenching but a move that everyone must see, and I think it is great what you have done. I will be very disappointed if it does not win at the Oscars.
FROM:roebi@mindspring.com

Dear Roberto Benigni,

Thoroughly appreciated your film. I am Jewish and have always been interested in stories about survival from the Holocaust. Thought your film is an excellent film for young children to watch and start to learn about it. The only problem is so far, the film is only translated with subtitles that would probably be too much (except for Italian children :) to read and watch the film. Do you know if the film will actually be translated with voice in the near future to English and other languages?

Dear Roberto Benigni,

I am a member of the Italian organization of Saints Cosma e Damiano Society in Cambridge and we have been trying to find a mailing or email address for Roberto. We have a large Italian festival (since 1926) and an extraordinary banquet each year. During our banquet which occurs each fall (close to Roberto's birthday!) we honor a man and woman of the year who have distinguished themselves and have contributed to the wonderful promotion and preservation of our beloved Italian heritage. This year it would be our honor to have Roberto Benigni and his lovely wife Nicoletta as our Man and Woman of the year for their many contributions to our Italian culture and for their outstanding representation of Italians. This area is rich in Italian culture and this banquet is one of the highlights in our Italian community. This feast began in 1926 when a group of immigrants from Gaeta, Italy settled in our area and wanted to continue their traditions that they had left behind. Saints Cosma and Damiano are the patron Saints of Gaeta and therefore they sent for statues of these Saints to begin their own festival in their new home. Today after 73 years this feast has grown immensely and people come from all over New England, and some even from Italy to attend. Well over 40,000 people attended last year and we expect that number to increase dramatically since we are approaching our 75th annual feast. Our 75th promises to be the biggest feast this area has ever seen!
